The Bible tells us the story of God's love and that love made known to us in Jesus, but it also has passages in it that are confusing! It definitely helps to be in a community as we seek God's message to us in our time.

Here are some ways we understand the Bible:
The Bible is our Holy and sacred book. In it, we listen for God who is Still Speaking. For as John Robinson (a pastor to the Pilgrims) said in 1620, “There is more light and truth to break forth from God’s holy word.
Understanding how to interpret the Bible has sometimes been a barrier for those who are searching and those who question a literal, fundamental Christian interpretation which we also question.
We read the Bible with an openness to questions and awe. We value the insights of science. We recognize that passages within it have been used to cause harm. That pain and injustice must be reckoned with. In contrast, the Bible has also served as a powerful witness–empowering and lifting up those who have faced oppression and those who have sought a world of justice, hope, and love–God’s Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
We cherish the Bible for in it we have come to know God’s love and hope. The Bible contains a vision for our lives based on God’s Love made known to us in Jesus Christ and the testimony of the prophets who call us to God’s way of justice, peace, and love. We seek to wrestle with the Bible faithfully as it comes from human hands –“ancient Israel and the early Christian movement.” Even as it contains passages that are historically bound and not as relevant to us, the Spirit of God has spoken and can speak to us through these texts as a “sacrament” – “a vessel of the Sacred” (Marcus Borg.)
The Bible is “a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path” (Psalm 119: 105.)
